What if we could make the friendship book about all the wonderful small and big things that make a friend good for us, honest and truly good just because of who they are and how they act? Not perfect friends, but good friends? And what if a child could pick up this book and see that not everyone you meet has to be a friend, but that if you spot a good one, they're a keeper.

So many times in my life, I have wondered this. Who is telling our stories? The stories of all of us, including Latino, Black, indigenous, Asian heroes, history, people, culture. When I was little, I wanted to see books with characters who looked like me and it was so rare when I did.
It was always a passion of mine to teach children, starting with my first job before college when I served as a summer camp leader for kids in West Dallas and then found myself teaching Sunday school classes, too. I felt it immediately: I had found my calling and I had to follow it.
